Mediterranean Storm-petrel chick recovered in an Atlantic colony off N Spain
Situation of Tabarca and Izaro islands off Spain Situación de las islas de Tabarca e Izaro en la costa española Situació de les illes de Tabarca i d'Izaro a les costes espanyoles While talking about the Storm-petrel ( Hydrobates pelagicus ) ringing season this june 2011 with Fernando Arce, he talked me about an interesting case: the recovery of a Mediterranean Storm-Petrel ( H.pelagicus melitensis ) in the Atlantic. But not near the Mediterranean but in a colony of the nominal subspecies in N Spain. A chick (fledging, thus born in the area) ringed in Tabarca island, Alicante, Mediterranean Sea ( 38.164327° N, 0.472305° W) on 8 August 2005 was recovered at Izaro island, Euskadi, Atlantic sea ( 43.422652° N, 2.683292° W) on 27 July 2008, almost 3 years later (Rafael Garaita). The minimum distance given the bird followed the coast from Tabarca to Izaro was of 2125 km, about the distance from Tabarca to Crete island if the bird had flown to the East instead of going into the Atlantic
