En la página web del Grupo Ibérico de Aves Marinas (GIAM) están ya disponibles para descargar dos números especiales de gran relevancia para la conservación de las aves marinas ibéricas. El nº 34, correspondiente a 2011 trata monográficamente de las Actas del 6º Congreso del GIAM y el Taller internacional sobre la Ecología de Paiños y Pardelas en el sur de Europa ( Valeiras, X., Muñoz, G., Bermejo, A., Arcos, J.M. y Paterson, A.M. Although scarce, albeit regular in both migration periods, there are very few records of White-winged Black Tern ( Chlidonias leucopterus ) in Spain during the winter months (December to February). The aim of this post is to collect them. The species, almost restricted to the Mediterranean seaboard (e.g. only 21 known records in Galicia, the latest for the autumn period on 31.10.1989, see Aves Raras en Galicia blog ) is a typical migrant. In the NE, it appears the last days of April and has a peak in the first ten days of May and it can be present until early June in scarcer numbers. Post-breeding migration begins during the summer, in late July and into August with further juveniles seen during September and sometimes October being the last records of the 2nd tenth of the month (Gutiérrez et al 1995 Els Ocells del Delta del Llobregat , Lynx Editions). Anthus petrosus. Meda Gran, L'Estartit, Girona 12.1.2012 © Ricard Gutiérrez El dia 12 de gener de 2012, acompanyat d'Aïda Tarragó i Àlex Lorente, vaig trobar un Anthus que vaig classificar com a petrosus a les illes Medes , Girona . Vaig veure un Anthus que sortia volant ' tipus spinoletta ' de la Meda Xica, prop la cova dels Caganers cap a la Meda Gran, al sector de l'Infern. Mira, un Anthus . L'ocell però  va reclamar en vol i aquí es va aixecar 'la llebre'. Era diferent de l' spinoletta , essent més curt i molt més agut . Aquest reclam ja l'havia escoltat abans a Asturies on em va cridar poderosament la diferència del del grasset de muntanya al que hi estem més acostumats. A la web de Xeno-canto.org hi ha reclams de petrosus semblants. A Catalunya petrosus és raresa magrat l'havia vist un cop abans, justament a l'espigó de l'Estartit, ja feia uns anys. Falco vespertinus 2 w ♂ Véjer de la Frontera, Cádiz, 6.1.2012 (Stephen Daly) On 6th January 2012, 1500hrs. at Patria (near Vejer de La Frontera), Cadiz, Andalucía, Stephen Daly & Stephen Knapp saw and photographed a ringed 2w male (euring 7) Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus). It is not only an overall scarce species in Spain but accidental in winter. Stephen Daly published an entry in his blog with photos of the bird and asked if any Spanish ringing program had been held. Indeed, according to the lastest data available on the whole of Spain, through official reports in the journal Ecología for 2007 , only three birds have been ringed from 1973-2007 in Spain, with two more in 2008 ( as explained in this blog ). No foreign recoveries had been reported for this species, a scarce migrant and sometimes irruptive species in Spain with over 200 individuals in 2008. So where the bird came from? Last issue of the journal Dutch Birding (vol 33 (5): 2011) publishes a paper from mine on the first known case of a presumed hybrid Ardeola ralloides x Bubulcus ibis (Gutiérrez, R.2011. Hybrid Squacco Heron x Cattle Egret in Ebro delta, Spain, in September 2010 and January 2011, Dutch Birding 33; 316-322). The paper deals with the identification of this individual and separation from presumed parent species ans well as potential pitfalls. A number of photos are included in the seven pages of the journal. On 1.1.2011 though, some digiscoped videos were taken too. And in this note we present three of them as a complement of the DB paper. You may note the jizz of the bird and even compare its proportions and size to nearby Cattle and Little Egrets ( Egretta garzetta ). Stephen Daly, the active birder operating in the Cádiz area with this Andalucian Bird Guides company , and a regular contributor to Rare Birds in Spain has sent us two stunning photos of a melanistic Montagu's Harrier ( Circus pygargus ). He quotes that on 2011 there is a high concentration of melanistic Montagu's Harriers this year at a roost of 80+ birds near La Janda, Cádiz, where seven or eight are melanistic forms. The melanistic form of Montagu's Harrier is rare in Europe, but perhaps up to 10% of birds in W Spain can be of that morph ( Pandolfi 2000 ), a number matching what has been reported by Stephen.
