Imagen
Figure 1. Falco eleonorae. Individual in flight c.26 nautic miles off Llobregat delta, Barcelona, Catalunya, 6 July 2017 (Ricard Gutiérrez)   On 6th July 2017 , 16:32 hours, Spanish time, an Eleonora's Falcon ( Falco eleonorae ) was seen in active flight c. 26 nautic miles SSE of Llobregat Delta, Barcelona at UTM ETRS89 coordinates 31T zone, x=423444, y=4521012. The bird was seen from MV Sicilia, a Balearia company vessel. Sicilia is a ferry connecting Eivissa island and Barcelona and the falcon was seen during a regular survey of endangered vertebrates (seabirds, cetaceans, turtles) conducted by the Catalan SeaLife Rescue Network ( @FaunaMarinaCat ). Photographed and identified by the author, the bird was flying at low level, c.20-30 meters over the sea level (force 1 wind in that moment). It was apparently flying towards NW Mallorca (figure 2), at a further 66 nautic miles. The record was introduced in the ornitho.cat database where recordings of the species in C...

Imagen
Although scarce, albeit regular in both migration periods, there are very few records of White-winged Black Tern ( Chlidonias leucopterus ) in Spain during the winter months (December to February). The aim of this post is to collect them. The species, almost restricted to the Mediterranean seaboard (e.g. only 21 known records in Galicia, the latest for the autumn period on 31.10.1989, see Aves Raras en Galicia blog ) is a typical migrant. In the NE, it appears the last days of April and has a peak in the first ten days of May and it can be present until early June in scarcer numbers. Post-breeding migration begins during the summer, in late July and into August with further juveniles seen during September and sometimes October being the last records of the 2nd tenth of the month (Gutiérrez et al 1995 Els Ocells del Delta del Llobregat , Lynx Editions). Migration dates can be a bit modified depending on latitude in the country. However, there are a number of records in Spain in wint...

In 2007, Gorka Ocio and Carlos Sánchez ( Butll.GIAM 28 ) described the movements of Audouin's Gulls ( Larus audouinii ) out of their regular breeding and migration haunts. Later, Gutiérrez & Guinart 2008 (British Birds 101:442-447) discussed about the vagrancy pattern of the species in C & N Europe following Ocio & Sánchez thoughts plus new evidence. Audouin's Gull however, remains as a rarity in the N Atlantic coast where some ringed birds have been seen. Current thought is that the species may gather with other species, notably Yellow-legged Gull ( L.michahellis ) a...

Mediterranean Storm-petrel chick recovered in an Atlantic colony off N Spain

Imagen
Situation of Tabarca and Izaro islands off Spain Situación de las islas de Tabarca e Izaro en la costa española Situació de les illes de Tabarca i d'Izaro a les costes espanyoles While talking about the Storm-petrel ( Hydrobates pelagicus ) ringing season this june 2011 with Fernando Arce, he talked me about an interesting case: the recovery of a Mediterranean Storm-Petrel ( H.pelagicus melitensis ) in the Atlantic. But not near the Mediterranean but in a colony of the nominal subspecies in N Spain. A chick (fledging, thus born in the area) ringed in Tabarca island, Alicante, Mediterranean Sea ( 38.164327° N, 0.472305° W) on 8 August 2005 was recovered at Izaro island, Euskadi, Atlantic sea ( 43.422652° N, 2.683292° W) on 27 July 2008, almost 3 years later (Rafael Garaita). The minimum distance given the bird followed the coast from Tabarca to Izaro was of 2125 km, about the distance from Tabarca to Crete island if the bird had flown to the East instead of going into the Atlantic...

Un buitre viajero [A wandering Griffon Vulture]

Imagen
